Do I have to Prime before Painting?

Painting can be a great DIY project. Everyone tackles this project differently. Now when you gather your materials, the most important is, of course, the paint. While at the store, you might see shelves of primer or  have to choose between the choosing a paint with primer in it. One of the most common questions we get is:
“Do I have to prime before painting?”

Here are the top 5 reasons why we think it is important to prime before painting:

  1. Coverage – Primer helps the paint adhere to the wall better. This can help you get the most out of your can of paint.
  2. New Drywall and Wood – Unprimed wood always has small holes that may be blind to the eye, but once you start painting they will be very visible. Same thing goes for drywall. It is best to always prime new material to avoid this.
  3. Changing Colors – If you will be changing color from a dark color to a light color, it would be best to use primer to get the best results. Some primer can be tinted a color close to the one you have chosen.
  4. Different Sheens – Paint does not adhere very well to a glossy sheen, so it is always best to prime first.
  5. High Moisture Areas  Areas such as kitchens and bathrooms should be primed with stain-blocking primer to keep from peeling from moisture. It also keeps away the mildew stains.
